NIMBA COUNTY, Liberia – A one-year-old boy cheated death on Tuesday after he was pulled unconscious from an uncovered well in the Garmah-Gbein Community of Sanniquellie, a dramatic rescue that has ignited urgent community concerns over public safety.

The infant, who had been missing for several hours, was discovered in the well at approximately 8:30 p.m. on November 25, 2025, following an intensive search by his family and local authorities. He was rushed to a local medical facility and is currently alive and receiving treatment.

The incident began around noon when the child slipped away unnoticed while his parents were occupied with their cook board business. After realizing he was missing, the parents launched a frantic search and reported him as a potential kidnapping victim to the police and via local radio announcements.

The search efforts stretched for hours with no success. As nightfall threatened to halt the operation, the family recalled the presence of an uncovered well in the area, a hazard that community members had previously warned about.

A focused search of the well led to the devastating discovery of the child’s lifeless body. He was rushed to a local medical facility and is currently alive and receiving treatment.

This near-tragedy has cast a spotlight on the silent danger posed by open wells, which are common in many communities and often left unprotected. These pits can become deadly traps, particularly for young children, lurking unseen in the dark or amidst overgrown vegetation.

Residents are now calling for immediate action to cover such wells and prevent a future catastrophe, hoping that this child’s survival serves as a critical warning rather than a somber tragedy.
