Monrovia — In a historic ruling that marks a turning point for Liberia’s democracy, the Supreme Court of Liberia has reaffirmed and upheld the rule of law, declaring Cllr. Fonati Koffa as the legitimate Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, amidst a tense legislative impasse that has gripped the nation for months.
In a heartfelt address, Cllr. Koffa invoked divine guidance, attributing the court’s decision to the resilience and good nature of the Liberian people. “Today, the Supreme Court has effectively recognized that our leadership holds the constitutional mandate of the first branch of government,” he stated, emphasizing that the ruling signifies the end of the prolonged standoff.
The legislative deadlock, which has challenged the stability and governance of Liberia for the past six months, is now poised to be resolved as the court’s decision is seen as a decisive victory for adherence to the rule of law. The court’s affirmation comes after months of political tension, protests, and appeals from various sectors of society.
Cllr. Koffa praised his colleagues who stood firm for justice and the rule of law, acknowledging the risks they faced both politically and financially. “Societies become great when ordinary men and women rise up to do extraordinary things,” he declared, saluting their courage and resilience.
He also extended heartfelt gratitude to Liberians across the globe who supported the cause through prayers, messages, and moral encouragement. “Without you, this advancement in our democracy would not have been possible,” he affirmed. “We will always remember, be proud of, and serve you.”
Addressing political opponents on the other side of the aisle, Koffa called for unity and reconciliation. “Let us reason together,” he urged, referencing President John F. Kennedy’s call for civility in politics. He expressed willingness to reach out to key leaders such as Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah and Honourable Richard Nagbe Koon to establish a joint reconciliation and transitional committee, emphasizing that progress may require personal sacrifice.
Koffa concluded with a plea for national unity and divine blessings, asserting that Liberia’s future depends on collective effort and adherence to democratic principles. “May the Almighty God bless the works of our hands and save the republic,” he said.
