–As He Alarms Over Death Threats

Monrovia, Liberia – Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has alarmed over alleged threats to his life and family, following a controversial press statement from the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT). Expressing his concerns during the Senate Tuesday, May 27, 2025, session, Senator Snowe revealed that he and his family have been subjected to a barrage of threatening messages.
“If you look at my phone, the threatening messages my family and I continue to receive,” he said and further noted: “My life is being threatened, Mr. Vice President. This is not politics, it’s about my life. Today, I may be seen as an opposition Senator, tomorrow any of you will be Senator in [the] opposition as well. Our Constitution calls for multi-party democracy. There will always be opposition in this country.”
The senator also disclosed that he had received alarming accusations from international security sources, alleging that he is plotting to overthrow the Liberian government—a claim he vehemently denied.
“I received calls from outside of Liberia, from security apparatus that I am trying to overthrow the Liberian government. Mr. Presiding, this is no small crime. I am asking the Senate to guarantee my security and my family . As of today, my security is in the hands of the state!” Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe noted in dismay.
Furthermore, Snowe directly implicated the Minister of Information, suggesting that any harm befalling him or his family should be traced back to the ministry’s recent statement. “If I die today, I want the Liberian people to know that the Minister of Information issued a statement that has threatened my life and if I die today or my family is harmed, he should be prepared to answer that question.”
Following his plea, Vice President Jeremiah Koung, presiding over the Senate, assured Senator Snowe of his protection, though specific security measures were not detailed.
The Controversial Statement
Last week, the Liberian government issued a rebuke against Bomi County Senator Edwin Snowe following what it describes as “irresponsible and inflammatory” statements threatening to destabilize the Boakai administration. In an official statement released Saturday, the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) accused the ECOWAS Parliament member of openly vowing to sabotage national governance for personal political gain.
The government’s statement references Senator Snowe’s alleged declaration that he would “do everything possible including using his connections in ECOWAS to make the Boakai-led government fail.” According to MICAT, Snowe went as far as threatening to discourage foreign direct investment and create conditions of instability until he achieves his presidential ambitions.
“This reckless rhetoric crosses dangerous lines,” the government statement asserts. “No citizen holds license to undermine their own nation by weaponizing regional institutions for personal ambition.” The administration emphasized that such statements constitute a direct threat to Liberia’s constitutional democracy and economic security.
Senator Snowe had this to say following the government’s statement, “I have just come across an unfortunate and deeply troubling statement posted on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Information, purportedly attributing to me inflammatory and irresponsible remarks allegedly intended to undermine and destabilize the Government of Liberia.”
He stressed: “While I take steps to verify the authenticity of this publication, I wish to state, in the strongest possible terms, that I categorically reject and condemn any such false and unfounded allegations. Should the statement be confirmed as authentic, I will immediately call for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into these malicious accusations against my person.”
Meanwhile, the Boakai government also alerted regional and international organizations about Snowe’s alleged destabilization plans. The statement specifically calls on ECOWAS, the African Union, and other multilateral bodies to prevent what it characterizes as an “anti-democratic plot” against Liberia’s elected government.
The administration positioned itself as a defender of regional stability, reminding partners of Liberia’s longstanding commitment to peace within the Mano River Union and ECOWAS frameworks. Officials stressed the country’s role as a reliable actor in West African economic integration and security cooperation.
“The government possesses both the capability and constitutional mandate to maintain national stability,” the statement continues, signaling a firm response to any perceived threats. Security analysts interpret this as a warning that Snowe could face legal consequences if his rhetoric escalates into action.
