-For Nimba County’s District 5 By-election

NIMBA COUNTY — The National Elections Commission (NEC) has officially launched the by-election process for Nimba County’s District 5, scheduling the pivotal vote for August 12, 2025. The electoral body issued the formal writ on Monday, June 9, marking the legal start of preparations for the race.  

The writ was issued to Upper Nimba Election Magistrate Milton Paye at the Commission’s headquarters on 9th Street, Sinkor, Monrovia — mandating Magistrate Paye to hold and preside over the by-election. The Writ of Election is a formal legal instruction issued by the Elections Commission in accordance with the New Elections Law of 1986, specifically Section 4.3 (2), which mandates the NEC to direct its election magistrates to proceed with elections in their respective counties or districts.

The election writ issued outlines key electoral dates, such as Publication of By-election Regulations and Guidelines, Accreditation of Party Agent, Media, and Observers for Polling Day, Candidate Nomination Period, Political Campaign Period, and Polling Day among others. Receiving the writ, NEC Liberia Upper Nimba Magistrate, Milton Paye pledged commitment to act on electoral reforms to ensure a “fair and credible” election in order to maintain the sanctity of the elections and people’s trust.

Mr. Paye also called on various stakeholders to work together to ensure “free, orderly, honest, and credible elections” in District 5. It can be recalled on May 26, 2025, the National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC-Liberia) expressed readiness to conduct Representative By-election in Nimba County District 5 based on receipt of official notification from the Liberian House of Representatives concerning a vacant seat in the 55th National Legislature.

The by-election in District#5, Nimba County comes based on the election of former Representative Samuel G. Kogar now senator of Nimba County in the just-ended April 22, 2025 Senatorial By-election in Nimba.
