The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has condemned the violent attack on the residence of Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie, describing the act as “gangsterism” and a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary.
According to the LNBA, unidentified armed men wielding machetes and sticks stormed the premises of Judge Willie, Resident Circuit Judge of Criminal Court “A,” in the late evening hours of Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The attackers, reportedly riding motorcycles, attempted to force their way into the judge’s home but were deterred by the prompt arrival of armed police.
This is the third such incident targeting Judge Willie’s residence, prompting widespread alarm within the legal community. The LNBA revealed that other judges have also reported receiving anonymous threats and experiencing attempted break-ins aimed at obstructing their duties. “These are acts of gangsterism that have no place in a civilized and democratic society. Such acts are a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary and undermine public confidence in the rule of law.” declared LNBA President Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah
The Bar’s leadership expressed deep concern over the increasing wave of threats facing judicial officers across the country, warning that such intimidation tactics could erode the integrity of Liberia’s justice system. “Judges must be allowed to carry out their functions free from intimidation, threats, or any form of influence—whether internal or external. The independence and safety of the judiciary are essential to preserving the integrity of Liberia’s justice system.”
The LNBA has called on the Ministry of Justice and all relevant state security bodies to immediately launch an investigation and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. In addition, the Bar urged the Liberia National Police to provide permanent police presence at Judge Willie’s residence and at the homes of all other judges who are similarly targeted.
Reiterating the government’s constitutional duty, the Bar reminded the authorities of their responsibility to protect all citizens—especially judicial officers like Judge Willie, who preside over sensitive, high-profile criminal cases. The LNBA also used the moment to express solidarity with the judiciary and to reject any form of lawlessness aimed at undermining Liberia’s fragile justice system.
Amidst the turbulence, the Bar extended warm birthday greetings to Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh on the occasion of her 70th birthday, hailing her “dedicated service, integrity, and excellence” in the nation’s legal sector.
But as threats against the judiciary escalate, legal stakeholders warn that unless swift, decisive action is taken, the rule of law itself may become the next victim.
