MONROVIA – Deputy Foreign Minister Deweh E. Gray has been appointed as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Resident Representative to Togo. The appointment positions Gray as a key liaison for the regional bloc during a period of critical challenges.
The role, formally confirmed by an ECOWAS agrément on June 28, 2025, followed a competitive vetting process. Gray emerged successfully from a shortlist of three nominees presented by Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Liberian Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti celebrated the appointment as a dual victory. “This is a proud moment for Cllr. Gray and a powerful affirmation of Liberia’s renewed stature on the regional stage,” Nyanti stated. “Her unwavering commitment and professionalism have been recognized, and this posting signals that Liberia is back as a trusted and influential partner in shaping West Africa’s future.”
As the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Lomé, Gray will be the principal link between the 15-member bloc and the Togolese government. Her mandate will include:
Advancing cooperation on regional peace and security initiatives.
Coordinating economic development and integration programs.
Promoting the core ECOWAS values of democracy and good governance.
The appointment comes as ECOWAS navigates a complex landscape marked by political transitions and the urgent need to strengthen economic and security cooperation across the region.
A Testament to Liberia’s Expanding Footprint
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that Gray’s success is part of a concerted strategy to secure stronger Liberian representation within international bodies. A ministry statement highlighted that the “prestigious appointment reflects not only Cllr. Gray’s outstanding record of service but also her long-standing contributions to regional integration.”
The ministry also expressed gratitude to the ECOWAS Commission for its confidence, assuring the bloc of Liberia’s steadfast commitment to regional unity.
