Monrovia, Liberia — The Feminist Coalition of Liberia, comprising the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL), Medica Liberia, the Liberia Feminist Forum (LFF), the Radical Young Women Movement, and Sister for Sister, has commended President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr. for submitting to the National Legislature the “Act to Ban Harmful Cultural Practices in Liberia.”
In a press release issued on October 23, 2025, the Coalition described the submission as a historic step forward in advancing the rights, safety, and bodily autonomy of Liberian women and girls.
“The proposed Act aligns with both national priorities and regional commitments, including the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls.
For decades, women’s rights advocates have worked tirelessly to end harmful traditional practices that perpetuate violence, discrimination, and trauma. The Feminist Coalition of Liberia emphasized its long-standing call for a permanent ban on all forms of harmful cultural practices, particularly those that violate women’s and girls’ rights to life, health, and dignity.
“We acknowledge the decision of the House of Representatives to forward the Act to the Committees on Gender, Health, Internal Affairs, and Judiciary for review,” the statement noted.
The Coalition urged the committees to approach their review with urgency, integrity, and a rights-based perspective, warning against any dilution or delay of the legislation.
“We will closely follow the legislative process and judicial interpretation to ensure the Act’s passage and full enforcement. We reaffirm our commitment to working alongside communities, government institutions, and international partners to eliminate harmful practices once and for all,” the Coalition added.
The statement concluded with a strong call to action, stressing the importance of protection for women and girls:
“Liberia’s women and girls deserve a nation that protects them, not one that tolerates traditions of harm. This is a defining moment to act decisively for equality, justice, and the future of our country.”
