Liberian journalist, advocate, and entrepreneur Andrew Tellewoyan has introduced a groundbreaking educational opportunity that will allow Liberian students to pursue advanced studies in Russia.
Tellewoyan, widely admired for championing youth development and academic growth, has secured partnerships with several Russian universities to provide Liberians with access to degree programs abroad. Through this initiative, 50 students are expected to enroll in various institutions across Russia beginning next academic year.
The program will offer undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral studies in disciplines such as engineering, medicine, business, and social sciences—fields for which Russian universities are internationally respected due to their strong research reputation and relatively affordable tuition.
Speaking to Women’s Voices, Tellewoyan emphasized the significance of the initiative. “Every young Liberian deserves access to world-class education,” he said. “Our partnerships in Russia will help students gain quality learning experiences, earn income while studying, and build global networks that will benefit them long after graduation.”
In addition to securing university placements, the program will support students with visa processing, accommodation, medical requirements, and other travel logistics to ensure a smooth transition.
Liberian students have long struggled to access international education due to high costs, limited opportunities, and the lingering effects of the civil war on the country’s education system. Tellewoyan’s effort is being welcomed as a major step toward addressing these challenges.
Educators and government officials have praised the initiative, calling it a timely intervention that could reshape the future of Liberian education. “This is a major advancement for our country,” one educator noted. “By opening doors for students abroad, Andrew is helping strengthen Liberia’s human capital.”
Tellewoyan says he plans to expand the program further by forming additional international partnerships to give more Liberian students diverse learning opportunities.
“My long-term vision is to build a culture of academic excellence in Liberia,” he said. “Until we get there, I will continue working to create avenues that help our young people compete globally.”
