-After Devastating Fires

The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) is expanding its humanitarian response as it assists 59 families affected by destructive fires in Grand Cape Mount and Montserrado counties, while also launching a major Workplace First Aid and Safety Training program for 600 employees of the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP).

The Red Cross began providing emergency support after the largest incident occurred on October 16 in Kru Town, Tewor District, Grand Cape Mount County. The blaze destroyed 22 houses and damaged nine others, displacing dozens of residents—mostly women and children—who are now staying with relatives or neighbors. Meanwhile, additional families in Montserrado County continue to seek Red Cross assistance following separate fire outbreaks that left them without homes and essential belongings.

To help affected households recover, the LNRCS is offering Cash Transfers to enable families to meet urgent needs such as food, temporary shelter repairs, and essential household replacement items. It is also distributing clothing, blankets, shower slippers, soap, and hygiene kits to provide immediate relief and comfort.

LNRCS Secretary General and CEO Gregory T. Blamoh emphasized the importance of swift action, explaining that the combination of Cash Transfers and relief supplies allows families to begin rebuilding their lives with dignity. He reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to assessing needs and responding to fire incidents across the country so that no community feels abandoned after disaster strikes.

At the same time, the Red Cross is rolling out a comprehensive Workplace First Aid and Safety Training program for 600 MFDP employees. Running from November 11 to December 4, 2025, the training follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and aims to strengthen workplace safety, improve emergency preparedness, and promote a culture of timely response within government offices.

Because First Aid is essential for providing immediate care before professional help arrives, the program equips participants with skills to manage sudden illnesses, injuries, workplace accidents, and other emergencies. Blamoh commended the Ministry for prioritizing employee safety, noting that preventing injuries protects lives, supports families, and enhances productivity. He added that First Aid training remains one of the Red Cross’s key income sources, helping fund humanitarian services such as its ongoing fire-response operations.

Through both its emergency relief efforts and its nationwide safety training initiatives, the Liberia National Red Cross Society continues to strengthen community resilience while protecting lives across Liberia.
