Monrovia – The political leader of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CMC), Musa Hassan Bility, has called for a more aggressive and radical opposition movement to wrestle power from President Joseph Boakai’s Unity Party in the 2029 general elections.
Speaking over the weekend on the Liberia Action TV Show, the Nimba County District #7 Representative leveled stunning allegations of electoral fraud, internal corruption, and a shadow government controlling the presidency.
Electoral Legitimacy Challenged
Representative Bility began his critique by fundamentally challenging the legitimacy of the 2023 presidential run-off election in Nimba County, a key electoral battleground. He asserted that the election was fraudulent and deliberately rigged in favor of the Unity Party. As his primary evidence, he pointed to the voter turnout figures, arguing that it is statistically impossible and globally unprecedented for a runoff election to have a higher voter turnout than the first round in any credible electoral process.
The CMC leader then turned his fire towards specific political figures, reserving his most severe accusations for Senator Emmanuel Nuquay. Bility declared that Senator Nuquay is not a genuine opposition figure but is instead “very arrogant and corrupt.” In a bombshell revelation, he claimed that he personally bankrolled Nuquay’s 2017 vice-presidential campaign on the ticket with Joseph Boakai, providing him with a sum of $300,000 USD to cover his financial needs.
Furthermore, Bility alleged that Senator Nuquay was a key plotter in the recent removal of Speaker Fonati Koffa, even going so far as to threaten Bility himself. “He called me to stop supporting Speaker Koffa or my business interests will be threatened,” Bility stated. He also accused Nuquay of being “rotten rich from the Liberian people’s sweat,” alleging that the senator had significantly under-declared his assets. According to Bility, when he informed Nuquay that he could no longer provide him with financial support, the senator then lied to Vice President Jeremiah Koung, telling him he was making a lot of money.
The criticism extended to other high-profile officials, including Senator Prince Moye of Bong County, whom Bility bluntly labeled “a dumb.” He also suggested that Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah is being blackmailed by the current government, implying that the administration possesses compromising information that explains why Fallah “doesn’t appear to be himself.”
A “Shadow Government” and a Passive Opposition
Building on his allegations of individual corruption, Representative Bility painted a picture of a presidency that is not in full control of its own administration. He claimed that a staggering 70% of government decisions are not in the hands of President Boakai but are instead controlled by a small, powerful circle that includes Vice President Koung, Senator Nuquay, and Senator Moye.
Bility also blamed the opposition’s collective passiveness for the removal of Speaker Koffa, arguing that they should have mobilized public protests against what he deemed an “unconstitutional removal.” This inaction, he suggested, is symptomatic of a larger problem within the opposition bloc.
Reflecting on his own political history, Bility lamented the fate of his former party, the Liberty Party, which he said was first “assimilated” and later “colonized” by the Unity Party, leading to its effective dissolution as an independent force.
Concluding his appearance, the CMC leader made an urgent appeal for a complete overhaul of the opposition’s strategy. He insisted that to successfully challenge the Unity Party in 2029, the opposition must abandon its current posture and transform into a more decisive, vibrant, and radical force capable of confronting and defeating the incumbent government.
