MONROVIA, Liberia – The Liberia Petroleum Regulatory Authority (LPRA) has confirmed it is actively investigating reports of an unidentified oily substance discovered in Beoin’s Town, Grand Bassa County.

In an official statement released on December 4, 2025, the regulatory body acknowledged the public concern surrounding the discovery. The LPRA emphasized that its response is governed by the Petroleum Exploration and Production Law of 2016, which mandates a strict verification and communication protocol for any suspected hydrocarbon find.

“This process is intended to prevent premature conclusions and ensure that the public receives information that has been thoroughly reviewed and validated by the LPRA,” the statement read.

According to the authority, field assessments began on December 3. Initial updates have already been provided to key stakeholders and the Office of the President. However, the LPRA stated that a final consolidated technical report and an official public announcement will be issued only after its evaluation is complete.

While the investigation is ongoing, the LPRA has issued a precautionary advisory urging residents of the area to avoid any contact with the substance. The authority also called on the public and media to refrain from speculation until its verified findings are formally released.

“We appreciate the high level of public interest in this matter,” the statement continued, “and remind all stakeholders that cautious, evidence-based communication… must guide all public disclosures in the oil and gas sector.” The LPRA thanked the public for its patience as it works to complete the assessment.
