‎NIMBA COUNTY, Liberia — Her Honor, Serena F. Garlawolu, the newly Assigned Presiding Judge for Nimba County’s 8th Judicial Circuit, has sent a clear message to practicing lawyers and court officers to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics under her gavel.

Judge Garlawolu spoke at the traditionally charged opening event of the February 2026 Term of Court, held at the main circuit of the 8th Judicial Complex in Sanniquellie, Nimba County on Monday, February 9, 2026. She emphasized the importance of adhering to judicial rules, warning that she will be closely monitoring the conduct of lawyers and court officers in her courtroom to ensure consistent practice and procedures as a matter of law.

Moreover, she urged legal practitioners to adhere to the rules and laws governing their profession, stressing that compliance is non-negotiable. “Under my gavel, we will uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is served,” she added. Judge Garlawolu encouraged counselors to prioritize preparation and timely filing of processes, avoiding unnecessary applications that hinder efficient case management, and waste the court’s time.

“Lawyers must strive to present well-prepared, comprehensive case files, demonstrating a keen sense of respect for the judicial process,” she said, setting a clear expectation for the term ahead.
The February 2026 Term of Court kicked off on Monday, February 9, with a substantial caseload, featuring 172 civil matters and 72 criminal cases. With this significant workload, Judge Garlawolu’s emphasis on efficiency and professionalism is seen as a welcome approach.

She was commissioned in 2017 and has presided over high-profile cases, including a 2024 gang rape case. Currently, she is the Resident Circuit Judge for Montserrado County’s Sexual Offenses Division Court.
The 8th Judicial Circuit Court plays a crucial role in Nimba’s judicial system, handling cases not covered by other courts, including admiralty cases, and appeals from government agencies and lower courts.

The Sanniquellie Judicial Complex, where the court is based, is a comprehensive facility with various courts, offices, and facilities for jurors and judges. The complex handles sensitive cases, including rape, and provides support services to the people of Nimba County. The female legal practitioner has a hefty caseload ahead, including 172 civil matters and 72 criminal cases.
