NIMBA COUNTY, Liberia – A 56-year-old woman identified as Mary Giah has reportedly confessed during a preliminary police investigation to the killing of her three grandchildren in Mehnla Town, District 9, Nimba County.
The suspect admitted to committing the act early Sunday morning. In her statement to investigators, she alleged that her daughter’s boyfriend had repeatedly accused her of practicing witchcraft and provoked her.
“I killed them because he kept calling me a witch. I believed nothing good would come between him and my daughter, so I bought a knife and razor blade and carried out the act,” she reportedly told authorities.
The victims—a 6-year-old girl and two boys aged 8 and 9—were left in the woman’s care while their parents were away for work. The suspect fled the scene after the incident, leaving the children’s bodies in her bedroom.
Residents grew concerned early Sunday morning when the house remained unusually quiet and neither the grandmother nor the children were seen outside as usual. Upon entering the home to investigate, community members discovered the lifeless bodies of the three children. She was not present at the time.
Local authorities and town leaders were immediately alerted, and this prompted a search for the suspect. After hours of searching across the town, she was apprehended by residents and handed over to the police. The suspect was swiftly taken to an undisclosed location for her safety and to allow for further investigation.
