-Amid Border Tension

MONROVIA — The Government of Liberia has moved to reassure citizens and residents amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions along the Liberia-Guinea border, announcing that a high-level delegation will be dispatched to Conakry within the next 24 hours for urgent talks with Guinean authorities.

In a statement issued Thursday from Capitol Hill, the Ministry of Information confirmed that the forthcoming visit is intended as a continuation of recent cross-border dialogue, following an interministerial engagement at the shared frontier. The Government of Liberia (GOL) emphasized that both bilateral and multilateral channels are being actively pursued, including through the Mano River Union (MRU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to support a peaceful and amicable resolution.

The National Security Council, chaired by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has been convening regularly to assess the situation. On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Council members briefed the leadership of both houses of the National Legislature on the developments along the border, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency and coordinated national response.

Amid rising concerns, the government reiterated its appeal to citizens—particularly those in border communities—to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with joint security forces deployed in Foya, Lofa County. Their presence, the statement noted, is intended to preserve peace and prevent further escalation.

Authorities also confirmed they are actively investigating a shooting incident that occurred at the border on Wednesday, which left a Liberian citizen injured. According to the government, the victim is in stable condition and responding well to treatment. A joint investigation involving security personnel from both sides is currently underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Ministry of Information urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from spreading unverified or false information that could inflame tensions or undermine national security.

“The Government reaffirms its commitment to resolving the current situation at the border through peaceful dialogue, diplomatic engagement, and peacebuilding,” the statement read.
