-To Ease Tensions

MONROVIA – The Liberian government has announced the immediate suspension of all mining activities in the contested border area of Lofa County. The government says this is intended to de-escalate a military standoff with neighboring Guinea.

According to a press release issued from the Capitol on Tuesday, the order specifically halts “all activities of BK Enterprises, as well as sand mining or any other mining activities of any other companies in the Lofa border area.” The suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation by Liberia’s National Security Council, which is expected to probe the root causes of the dispute.

The announcement follows a period of heightened tension and troop movements along the border near the town of Solumba. The government confirmed that it has engaged with authorities in Conakry, who clarified that recent Guinean military maneuvers were part of a process to implement a withdrawal directive. The Liberian government welcomed the development, stating that the Government of Guinea had issued an order for its military forces to return to their previous positions.

To further solidify the path toward de-escalation, the governments of Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone have issued a joint communiqué reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace along their shared frontiers. The three heads of state, as members of the Mano River Union, have pledged to resolve any future disputes exclusively through peaceful diplomatic means, invoking Article 33 of the United Nations Charter, which encourages dialogue and negotiation.

With tensions still simmering, authorities have urged residents of border communities to remain calm and law-abiding. The government assured the public that joint security forces are on the ground to manage the situation and ensure the safety of all residents.

Officials also issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation or disinformation intended to sensationalize the situation or undermine national peace and security. The media has been encouraged to report responsibly and seek official clarification when necessary.

The Liberian government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its territory while working constructively with its neighbors to preserve regional stability, stating that the public will be kept informed of any further developments.
