Congo Town, Monrovia: Over a hundred high school female students have gained practical exposure to emerging technologies in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Digital Marketing, Cybersecurity, and Web Development. The initiative was held in I’m commemoration of the 2026 Girls in Information Communication Technology (ICT) Day.

The endeavor, undertaken by the Liberia Information Technology Students Union (LITSU) in collaboration with Starz University, Amara IT Solutions, and CSquared aimed at equipping young girls with relevant digital skills and increased females participation to bridge the digital gap in the ICT sector.

Globally, Girls in ICT Day serves as a platform to encourage girls and young women to consider careers in ICT. In Liberia, the digital gender gap remains a significant challenge, with limited access to technology education and professional opportunities for young girls. Consequently, the program was designed as a strategic intervention to bridge these gaps and contribute to national development priorities in ICT and education.

The program celebrated recently, brought together students from various institutions and young ICT professionals to foster an inclusive and empowering learning environment, through a structured combination of technical modules, interactive engagement, and performance-based competitions. 

Additionally, the program emphasized pathways to global certification, linking participants to internationally recognized platforms such as Coursera, edX, freeCodeCamp, and YouTube.

Remarking at the end of the program, the President of the Liberia Information Technology Students Union (LITSU), Sekou Ibn Majey Kamara expressed appreciation to the females for their participation, highlighting that the initiative responded to the growing need to address gender disparities in ICT by providing hands-on training, mentorship opportunities, certification guidance, and competitive learning activities. 

According to him, LITSU, as a national student-led ICT body, recognizes the urgency and need of increasing female participation in STEM and ICT fields, providing equitable access to digital skills training, creating platforms for mentorship and career guidance, and aligning youth capacity-building initiatives with Liberia’s digital transformation agenda. 

” During the program, we improved digital literacy among participants, Increased awareness of ICT career pathways, enhanced confidence and interest among girls in technology, and strengthened mentorship connections. Also, we encouraged participation in global certification programs. The initiative contributed to building a pipeline of future female ICT professionals in Liberia,” he concluded. 

Delivering the keynote address, Ms. Alice K. Adjei, a distinguished female ICT professional and digital advocate inspired and encouraged women to fully participate in the ICT sector, disabusing their minds that ICT is not for men, despite being a male-dominated profession. 

She provided personal insights into her career journey and highlighted practical advice on overcoming barriers in the tech industry and motivated young girls to pursue ICT careers.

The event concluded successfully with strong participation, measurable learning outcomes, and increased motivation among participants to pursue ICT-related careers. All participants received certificates of participation, as these activities enhanced learning retention, teamwork, and confidence.
