MONROVIA, Liberia – Jeety Trading Corporation used its annual Independence Day feeding at Monrovia Central Prison not just to distribute meals, but to amplify a pressing national demand: transform Liberia’s correctional facilities from warehouses of despair into workshops of opportunity.
The July 26 outreach, now a Liberian tradition, saw the company’s founder, Upjit Singh Sachdeva (Jeety), praised by Assistant Minister Atty. Gabriel F. Ndupellar—speaking for Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh—for his unwavering humanitarian commitment. But the event quickly became a platform for urgent policy advocacy.
“We cannot rebuild this nation while ignoring the inmate population,” Ndupellar said, revealing that the Ministry of Justice has drafted a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to convert prisons into vocational training centers. He called on the private sector to follow Jeety’s lead, noting that many inmates possess skills that could contribute meaningfully to Liberia’s development—if given the chance.
The assistant minister highlighted stark cases: commercial motorcyclists jailed after their bikes were stolen, unable to repay owners; others awaiting trial for years over minor offenses. “True justice,” he stressed, “means restoring dignity and purpose, not just meting out punishment.”
Jeety’s manager framed the feeding program as a moral statement: “True independence is reflected in how we treat the most forgotten among us.” He thanked prison staff and volunteers for helping deliver that message of hope alongside hot meals.
As Liberia marked its 179th Independence Day, Sunday, Jeety Trading turned charity into catalyst—proving that corporate responsibility can drive systemic change. With a reform plan on the table and a corporate champion leading by example, the call is unmistakable: invest in rehabilitation, or continue paying the cost of wasted lives.
