Monrovia — Two senior Liberian officials, Dr. J. Luther Tarpeh, National Chairman of the Unity Party, and Dr. Ibrahim Nyei, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, have hailed China’s decades-long investment in the country’s human capital, describing the training programs as a “valuable opportunity” for Liberia to learn from China’s development experience, even as they reaffirmed the nation’s firm adherence to the one-China principle.
The remarks came Wednesday evening at a reception hosted by Ambassador Yin Chengwu for participants of China’s human resources training program, held in Monrovia. More than 100 guests attended, including the two officials; and a diverse cohort of trainees representing various sectors of Liberian society.
In their remarks, Chairman Tarpeh and Deputy Minister Nyei offered high praise for China’s long-standing support for Liberia’s capacity building, expressing deep appreciation for the training programs China has provided across multiple fields — from agriculture and public health to governance and infrastructure.
They noted that such initiatives offer Liberians invaluable exposure to practical knowledge and systems that have driven China’s own transformation, and they reiterated Liberia’s unwavering commitment to the one-China principle as a cornerstone of bilateral relations.
‘Ambassadors of Friendship’
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Yin framed the training initiative as far more than a technical exchange. “China’s human resources program is a major driver of shared development, a great channel for people-to-people exchange, and an important measure for implementing the Global Development Initiative and advancing the building of a community with a shared future for humanity,” he said.
Reflecting on the program’s legacy, Ambassador Yin noted that over the years, China has trained a significant number of professionals across Liberia — from agriculture and public health to governance and infrastructure. He urged the current cohort to “study hard, contribute to Liberia’s development, and serve as ambassadors of China-Liberia friendship,” adding that their success would be the truest measure of the partnership’s impact.
Representatives of the trainees expressed their appreciation for the training opportunities and said that they would apply the knowledge and skills gained through the programs to their work and make practical contributions to Liberia’s development.
The reception, hosted by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in collaboration with Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, comes at a time when both nations are seeking to expand cooperation beyond traditional aid models into more sustainable, people-centered partnerships.
