SANNIQUELLIE CITY, NIMBA COUNTY – Protesters blocked ArcelorMittal Liberia’s railway in Sanniquellie City early Monday, April 13, 2026, drawing a heavy deployment of armed police officers as aggrieved workers brought the steel giant’s operations to a halt before the standoff ended peacefully hours later.

The joint demonstration, staged by SEGAL workers, redundant employees, and permanent contractors of AML, saw protesters occupying the train track, preventing movement along the key iron ore export route. Heavily armed police officers quickly gathered at the scene, creating a tense atmosphere, though no violence or arrests were reported.

Demonstrators said they acted after years of complaints and legal battles with the company over resettlement and fair benefits. The blockade ended peacefully, and the railway was reopened.
