Residents of Salala in Bong County are praising Agriculture Minister Dr. Alexander Nutah for securing a landmark agriculture investment for Liberia.
The community specifically hailed the recent signing of an agreement between the Liberian government and Vietnam’s Uniland Group. The company will launch a rice production project, beginning with a pilot phase in Salala.
Salala Commissioner Karmone Kanneh said involving locals in this public-private investment is a direct path to economic empowerment and poverty reduction. Residents view the selection of their district as a sign the Minister prioritizes their livelihood and wants them to help close Liberia’s food security gap.
As part of the deal, Uniland Group will establish its Liberian operational hub and headquarters in Salala. The plans include building a major production factory.
The project will start with Uniland’s subsidiary, Unifarm, cultivating a 50-hectare pilot rice farm. The company will use Vietnamese technology to enhance cultivation of Liberia’s staple food. Uniland Managing Director Peter Dinning stated the first crop will be planted by May of this year, with harvest expected within three months.
The agreement supports the government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development. Officials say the investment has the potential to boost food production, move Liberia toward self-sufficiency, and bring significant economic prospects to Salala.
