PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — The Congress for Democratic Change – United States of America (CDC–USA) has announced plans to formally engage the United States Congress, the State Department, and international democracy-support institutions following concerns over Liberia’s recent appointment of Mr. Jonathan Weedor as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC) and reported police brutality involving a sitting lawmaker.
The decision came out of an emergency meeting convened by the diaspora group on April 1, 2026, which brought together CDC–USA state chapter leaders and stakeholders across the United States. The organization said it is preparing formal communications to advocate for strengthened oversight, monitoring, and support for Liberia’s democratic processes.
They warn that the appointment of Mr. Jonathan Weedor as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC) could undermine the credibility, neutrality, and independence of the country’s electoral system. CDC–USA noted that any perceived or actual conflict of interest in the NEC’s leadership could erode public confidence and pose risks to national stability ahead of future elections.
The meeting also addressed broader governance and human rights issues, including reports that Rep. Frank Sarh Foko was tear-gassed by police while meeting with constituents in District #9, Montserrado County. Members stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law, protecting civil liberties, and ensuring government accountability.
“Liberia’s democracy must remain anchored in fairness, transparency, and the rule of law,” the organization stated. “At this critical moment, collective responsibility and timely engagement are essential to preserving the country’s peace and democratic future.”
CDC–USA also called on Liberians in the diaspora and international partners to remain vigilant. The group said it remains committed to unity and strategic action ahead of its upcoming National Convention in Philadelphia, where further discussions on Liberia’s democratic trajectory are planned.
