In a significant boost to Liberia’s law enforcement capacity, the Government of the People’s Republic of China on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, donated a large consignment of logistical supplies to the Liberia National Police (LNP), reaffirming strong bilateral ties and support for Liberia’s national security and development agenda.
The donation, officially handed over on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Liberia National Police in Monrovia, includes 3,000 sets of police uniforms, 1,000 pairs of leather shoes, 1,500 police hats, 500 boots, 1,500 undershirts, 1,500 raincoats, 90 motorcycles, 1,100 DMR handheld digital radios, and 55 handheld dual-mode radios. The supplies are expected to significantly enhance police mobility, communication, and overall operational readiness nationwide.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Ambassador Yin Chengwu, described the donation as the outcome of discussions held between President Xi Jinping of China and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). According to the Ambassador, the support underscores China’s continued commitment to strengthening Liberia’s law enforcement institutions.
Addressing Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, Inspector General of Police Gregory O.W. Coleman, Ambassador Yin Chengwu expressed appreciation to all partners involved in making the project successful, particularly the Liberia National Police and the teams working closely with the Chinese Embassy.
The Ambassador noted that the donated items—especially the uniforms, motorcycles, and communication equipment—are designed to enhance the LNP’s daily operations, including community policing, field operations, and rapid response. He expressed hope that the supplies would directly support officers in carrying out their duties more effectively.
Highlighting the broader significance of the donation, the Chinese envoy outlined three key points. Ambassador Yin Chengwu described the assistance as a concrete manifestation of China’s support to Liberia in strengthening its law enforcement capacity, emphasizing that police officers are the guardians of the community who require adequate tools to perform their demanding and often risky duties.
The Ambassador said the donation reflects China’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, noting that public security is a vital pillar of national stability, the rule of law, and the overall well-being of the Liberian people. He added that China is also undertaking additional projects aimed at supporting the government’s development priorities under the ARREST agenda.
He described the event as a vivid demonstration of the China-Liberia strategic partnership, stressing that the donation represents not only the delivery of essential materials but also the continuation of a long-standing friendship and mutual trust between the two countries.
He recalled previous cooperation in the law enforcement sector, including training programs for Liberian officers in China and the dedication of the Fingerprint Examination Laboratory equipment project in 2024. “These supplies add another achievement to our cooperation and will inject new impetus into China-Liberia relations,” the Ambassador said, reaffirming China’s commitment to continued engagement, cooperation, and exchange with the Liberia National Police.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the LNP, Inspector General Gregory O.W. Coleman expressed profound appreciation to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China for what he described as a timely and impactful gesture.
IGP Coleman said the donation clearly demonstrates the long-standing friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect between Liberia and China, and noted that the supplies will significantly strengthen the operational capacity of the Liberia National Police. He assured the Chinese Government that the items will be used strictly for their intended purposes.
The Inspector General further reaffirmed the LNP’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across Liberia, while deepening bilateral cooperation with international partners in support of national stability and public safety.
