Jonathan M. D. Yanzee, Liberia’s youthful human rights advocate and Executive Director of Campaign for Human Rights and Development (CHRD), has raised an alarm over alleged brutality, assault, and torture inflicted upon him by officers of the Liberia National Police’s Anti-Robbery Division. The incident reportedly took place on Saturday night, March 15, 2026, at the 1405 Community in Barnersville Township, Montserrado County, Liberia.

Jonathan Yanzee, a Human Rights Defender, alleged he was attacked by Anti-Robbery Unit officers over his presence at an electricity theft scene. Yanzee claims he was observing from a distance when officers ordered someone down from an LEC pole. Without provocation, an officer shone a flashlight in his face and punched him twice, demanding to know his identity. When Yanzee identified himself as a Human Rights Defender, the officer became aggressive.

According to him, the officers beat him, stating they would address him before he advocates for others, and accused human rights defenders of destabilizing the country. He claimed he was forced into a vehicle, where the abuse continued, resulting in bleeding and coughing.  The officers reportedly threatened his life. He was later taken to the Liberia National Police Headquarters and released. The individual identified officers are Alex, Solo, and Marcus as being involved in the incident.

He highlighted a concerning pattern of police brutality, torture, and intimidation against citizens and human rights defenders in Liberia. “No state official has the right to torture, assault, or threaten a citizen for advocating for human rights,” he said. Jonathan M. D. Yanzee, Executive Director of the Campaign for Human Rights and Development (CHRD), plans to file formal complaints with state institutions and civil society organizations in Liberia for further investigation.

He further called on the Professional Standards Division of the Liberia National Police, the Ministry of Justice of Liberia, and the Independent National Commission on Human Rights to immediately investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.  “Justice must not only be done for me — but for every Liberian who has been tortured, abused, or silenced by those sworn to protect them,” emphasizing the need for accountability and protection of citizens’ rights.

CHRD is pushing for a thorough probe into the matter, seeking justice and reforms to prevent future incidents.
