-ANC Brands UP Headquarters’ Desire Over National Interest

Monrovia, Liberia – The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has accused the ruling Unity Party (UP) administration of prioritizing the acquisition and expansion of party headquarters over addressing the dire economic and social crises crippling the nation.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the ANC described the government’s focus as “deeply troubling” and a clear sign of a leadership “increasingly out of touch with the daily hardships of its citizens.”
The rebuke centers on the perceived misallocation of the government’s “time, resources, and political energy” toward building the UP’s political infrastructure while the Liberian populace grapples with what the ANC terms “urgent, bread-and-butter issues.” The party listed a cascade of failures: skyrocketing commodity prices, rampant unemployment, a collapsing health sector, deteriorating roads, and a stagnant economy.
“At a time when countless Liberians are struggling to survive, the Unity Party’s primary achievement appears to be the expansion of its own political footprint,” Secretary General Nimely stated. “This is not governance—it is self-serving politics at the expense of the ordinary people.”
The ANC’s critique extends beyond policy inaction to allegations of systemic self-enrichment within the administration. The statement accuses government officials of benefiting from “unchecked allowances, unnecessary overseas trips, inflated contracts, and opaque financial dealings,” juxtaposing this perceived corruption with the suffering of citizens.
The opposition party highlighted immediate practical crises exacerbating public hardship, including severe water scarcity at the onset of the dry season and the Liberia Electricity Corporation’s (LEC) commencement of power rationing due to low supply. These service failures, the ANC argues, underscore the urgent need for investment in public infrastructure and welfare, not political real estate.
“Liberians did not vote for a government that would put party interests above national well-being,” the statement read. “They deserve a government that works for them, not one that enriches itself while citizens struggle to survive.”
The ANC called for an immediate and decisive shift in the government’s priorities, urging the UP-led administration to “redirect its attention toward policies that meaningfully address poverty, food insecurity, joblessness, and the collapse of public services.”
Concluding the release, the ANC reaffirmed its commitment to holding the government accountable and advocating for the populace, signaling a continued and sharp political challenge to the Unity Party’s agenda. The Unity Party has yet to issue a formal response to these allegations.
