ABUJA — The ECOWAS Parliament has formally expressed its sympathy to former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor following the passing of her only child, Charles Philip Taylor Jr., last month.
In a condolence message dated February 3, 2026, the parliament’s leadership conveyed its “deepest and most heartfelt condolences” to Howard-Taylor, describing the loss as “tragic” and “irreplaceable.”
Charles Philip Taylor Jr. died on January 20, 2026. The message, signed on behalf of the Honourable Members and staff of the ECOWAS Parliament, acknowledged the dual burden of grief borne by Howard-Taylor “as a mother and as a leader.”
“No words can adequately express the pain of such a loss,” the letter stated. “Please know that during this most difficult time, Your Excellency is not alone. The entire ECOWAS parliamentary family stands with you in solidarity, compassion, and prayer.”
The communication also honored Howard-Taylor’s public service, noting that her “strength, dignity, and lifelong commitment to the advancement of our region have inspired many across West Africa and beyond.”
It concluded with a prayer for “eternal rest” for the departed and for fortitude for the former Vice President, extending “assurances of our highest consideration and deepest sympathy.”
Madam Jewel Howard-Taylor served as Vice President of Liberia from 2018 to 2024. She remains an influential figure in regional politics.
The ECOWAS Parliament, based in Abuja, serves as the forum for dialogue and consultation for representatives of the people of the Economic Community of West African States.
