-To Boost Accountability

GANTA, Nimba County — Female journalists and activists from across Nimba County have concluded a two -day civic technology training aimed at strengthening public accountability, transparency, and community engagement at the grassroots level.
The workshop, held in Ganta City, was hosted by the Center for Media Studies and Peacebuilding (CEMESP–Liberia) with funding support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Accra, Ghana.
However,the training brought together female journalists from community radio stations operating in all nine political districts of Nimba County.
Meanwhile, speaking at the opening ceremony, CEMESP Executive Director, Mr. Malcolm W. Joseph, said the initiative was designed to equip female journalists with digital and civic technology skills to better demand accountability, amplify citizens’ voices, and responsibly expose corruption and human rights violations.
According to Mr. Joseph, community radio remains the most accessible medium for ordinary citizens, and empowering women journalists with modern tools enhances inclusive democracy and strengthens peace at the local level.
In addition of addressing participants was Mr. Melvin Korboi, Secretary General of the Nimba Community Radio Network, who praised CEMESP for investing in the professional growth of female journalists. He emphasized the crucial role community radio plays in promoting transparency, accountability, and peacebuilding across the county.
The Female Journalists Association of Liberia (FeJAL) Nimba County Coordinator, Ms. Williett Woynenh, encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained to uphold ethical journalism, protect digital rights, and increase women’s visibility in governance and public accountability reporting.
The training covered topics including accountability journalism, civic technology, reporting on corruption and human rights, digital rights, artificial intelligence in journalism, digital reporting tools, social media advocacy, storytelling, networking, and fact-checking and verification techniques.
Participants commended the practical nature of the sessions, noting that the training has strengthened their capacity to produce credible, impactful, and technology-driven stories that address community needs throughout Nimba County.
CEMESP reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening independent media, promoting peacebuilding, and advancing inclusive governance in Liberia, while expressing appreciation to the Embassy of the Netherlands for its continued partnership and support.
