Liberia – Grand Gedeh University has been officially launched alongside a $1 million endowment fund drive aimed at strengthening the institution’s long-term sustainability and growth.

The initiative, led by University President Dr. Eric Z. M. Gbotoc, underscores a renewed national focus on education as a cornerstone of development, particularly in underserved regions of Liberia.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Gbotoc emphasized that the endowment fund is designed to address pressing financial and institutional challenges facing the university. According to him, the fund will support the recruitment of qualified lecturers, the improvement of classroom facilities, the expansion of internet access, and the enhancement of administrative and academic capacity.

“This endowment fund represents a strategic solution to both immediate and future funding constraints,” he noted. “It will ensure that Grand Gedeh University remains financially stable while delivering quality education to its students.”

The fund will also provide scholarships for academically deserving but economically disadvantaged students, support faculty development programs, and invest in modern infrastructure such as digital learning systems, laboratories, and online library services.

Dr. Gbotoc highlighted that a sustainable endowment will reduce reliance on government funding, attract highly qualified faculty, and strengthen international academic partnerships.

The launch ceremony drew government officials, education stakeholders, development partners, students, and members of the public. Speakers described the transformation of the institution from a community college into a fully-fledged university as a historic achievement for the southeastern region.

“This is more than the opening of a university,” one speaker declared. “It is the birth of hope and opportunity for thousands of young people who can now access higher education closer to home.”

Strategically located in southeastern Liberia, Grand Gedeh University is expected to serve students from Grand Gedeh, River Gee, Sinoe, Maryland, and surrounding counties, while also attracting students from across the country.

Officials emphasized that the university aims not only to expand access but also to compete nationally by delivering high-quality education and fostering innovation.

Students were encouraged to take full advantage of the opportunity, while educators were commended for their dedication and urged to maintain high professional standards despite ongoing challenges in the sector.

As part of the commitments announced during the event, support was pledged for the construction of a modern student center to enhance campus life and promote collaboration and innovation.

The launch sends a strong message about Liberia’s commitment to tackling key development challenges, including illiteracy, limited access to education, and the migration of skilled professionals.

With the establishment of Grand Gedeh University and its endowment fund, stakeholders say the country is taking a significant step toward building a more inclusive, educated, and resilient society.
