Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine Joins Elite African Leadership, the Amujae Leaders Initiative

Monrovia, Liberia — In a momentous achievement for Liberia and a testament to resilience and courage, Cllr. Charlyne Mnamah-Mar Brumskine has been named among the distinguished 2024 cohort of the Amujae Leaders Initiative, a prestigious program dedicated to elevating African women into top leadership roles across the continent.

The announcement underscores a journey marked by fearless decision-making amidst personal fears and doubts. “I am sometimes scared. I am sometimes overtaken by doubt. I am often fearful that I will make the wrong decision,” Brumskine admitted in a Facebook post. “But I did it anyway.”

Her path has been characterized by bold choices—establishing her own law firm instead of joining her father’s legacy, taking the counselor-at-law exam, running for political office in Buchanan City, and accepting the nomination to serve as Vice Presidential candidate. Each step, she confesses, was accompanied by fear, yet driven by a conviction to forge her own destiny.

A Lesson in Courage and Faith

Brumskine’s story delivers a powerful message: the importance of doing it scared. “Do it when they tell you that you can’t do it. Do it even if no one else is doing it. Take calculated risks, trust God, and always bet on yourself,” she urged. Her unwavering determination has now positioned her among Africa’s most influential women leaders.

A Rising Star Among Africa’s Elite

The Amujae Leaders Initiative—founded in 2020 by former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf—aims to revolutionize leadership paradigms across Africa. By focusing on elevating women into the highest levels of government and influence, the program is shifting the very fabric of power dynamics on the continent.

Brumskine’s inclusion in this year’s cohort is particularly significant, as she is the sole Liberian selected. She joins a distinguished group of 13 women, including current ministers, former officials, and senior advisors from countries such as Sierra Leone, Sao Tome and Principe, Tunisia, Lesotho, Gambia, and Nigeria.

A Legacy of Service and Excellence

A lawyer, entrepreneur, and politician, Brumskine embodies integrity, excellence, and service. She holds a Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Columbia University’s Barnard College, and is currently pursuing a Master of Law in Corporate and Commercial Law from King’s College London. She was Valedictorian of the Liberia Supreme Court Bar Exam in 2022 and is admitted to multiple U.S. courts and the Liberia National Bar.

Her journey is also deeply rooted in the support of her family and community. She credits her mother, Estelle Brumskine, for her prayers; her husband, Charles Dennis, for his steadfast support; and mentors like Cllr. Moriah Yeakula-Korkpor for inspiring her belief in her potential.

Inspiration for Liberia and Beyond

As she prepares to join this elite network of change-makers, Brumskine’s story is poised to inspire countless young Liberian girls and women to aspire beyond societal limitations. Her journey exemplifies how perseverance, faith, and courage can break barriers and redefine leadership.

“Liberia, I represent you! Pray for me,” she said. “The pressure is on to make you and Her Excellency Madame Ellen Johnson Sirleaf proud.”

Her inclusion in the Amujae cohort signifies not just personal achievement but also a broader movement toward transformative leadership in Africa—one that empowers women to challenge the status quo and lead with integrity and vision.

A Bright Future for Liberia

As a trailblazer, Brumskine’s success underscores the power of resilience and the importance of taking risks, even when fear looms large. Her story reminds us all that the greatest victories often come from doing it scared.
