-Former President Weah Disputes Boakai’s Claims of Recent Dialogue

By Jerromie S. Walters

Monrovia, Liberia – Former Liberian President George Manneh Weah has publicly disputed claims by President Joseph Boakai that the two leaders recently spoke, revealing instead that their last conversation was over a year ago.

The clarification comes after President Boakai earlier stated that he had engaged in discussions with former Presidents Weah and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, among other prominent leaders, in observance of Unification Day. However, in a statement released today, Weah refuted any direct communication beyond a brief text exchange earlier in the day.

Missed Call and Text Exchange

Weah disclosed that he received a missed call from an unknown number Wednesday morning, followed by a text message from President Boakai extending Unification Day greetings and a call for national unity.

“I responded to said message in return by also wishing him a happy Unification Day,” Weah stated. However, he emphasized, “I have not spoken to President Boakai since January 2024.”

Criticism of “Superficial” Unity Efforts

The former president took the opportunity to critique what he described as political posturing, stressing that genuine national unity must be rooted in constitutional order and respect for democratic institutions.

“True unification is not based on superficial political gimmicks, but on the rule of law and constitutional order,” Weah asserted. He further urged President Boakai to demonstrate respect for past and present leaders while upholding Liberia’s democratic principles.

Call for Rule of Law and Democratic Integrity

Weah’s statement concluded with a pointed appeal: “I again urge President Boakai to respect the rule of law, respect past and present political leaders, and uphold the sanctity of our hard-fought democratic institutions and processes in order to foster national unification.”
