Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has formally charged former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and several other lawmakers in connection with the December 2024 fire that ravaged the Joint Chambers of the Capitol Building.

Koffa faces charges of criminal facilitation, arson, and criminal conspiracy to commit arson following hours of interrogation at the LNP headquarters on Friday. The charges stem from an ongoing investigation into the blaze, which caused significant damage to the seat of Liberia’s legislature.

Also charged are Representatives Jacob Debee (District #3, Grand Gedeh County) and Abu Kamara (District #15, Montserrado County), accused of criminal conspiracy and criminal facilitation to commit arson, The accused lawmakers were part of the then-Minority Bloc, all of whom were summoned earlier this week for questioning.

In a striking moment, Koffa was seen arriving at the LNP headquarters carrying a toothbrush, a gesture many interpreted as preparation for possible detention. The image has since sparked discussions on social media, with some viewing it as an act of defiance.
The LNP is expected to address the press shortly.
