The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, in collaboration with its partners, will on Friday, March 6, 2026, join the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD), a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of women across social, economic, cultural, and political spheres.

In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring March 8 of every year to be observed as International Women’s Day. The day commemorates the historic struggle to improve the lives and rights of women and is celebrated around the world at both local and national levels.

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 around the world as a moment of global solidarity and recognition of the vital role women play in advancing development, peace, and equality.

The 2026 International Women’s Day is being commemorated under the global theme, “Give to Gain,” while Liberia’s national theme for the celebration is “Give to Gain: Support Women for National Development.”

This national theme builds on Liberia’s legacy of women as peace-builders and change agents. It calls for moving beyond symbolic recognition toward practical and sustained actions that empower women and girls to lead and excel in governance, entrepreneurship, innovation, climate resilience, and social development.

As part of the national observance, the day’s celebration will commence with a parade beginning at 8:00 a.m. from ELWA Junction to the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, where an official program will be held. The event will bring together government officials, civil society organizations, development partners, women’s groups, youth, and members of the public to celebrate and reaffirm a collective commitment to women’s empowerment and national development.

As Liberia joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Women’s Day, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection calls on all stakeholders, including government institutions, civil society organizations, development partners, the private sector, and communities, to renew their commitment to advancing gender equality and supporting women and girls across the country.

Empowering women is not only a matter of rights and justice; it is a strategic investment in Liberia’s peace, prosperity, and sustainable development. When women thrive, families flourish, communities grow stronger, and the nation progresses.

Happy International Women’s Day 2026.
