-Health Ministry Appeals for Calm as Strike Looms at Phebe Hospital

BONG COUNTY, Liberia — The Ministry of Health has expressed deep concern over a growing crisis and the threat of pending strike actions by health workers at Phebe Hospital, warning that a work stoppage could severely disrupt essential healthcare services for citizens in Bong County and surrounding communities.
In a statement released Sunday, February 22, 2026, the Ministry acknowledged the grievances of the workers but emphasized the critical need to maintain uninterrupted care for vulnerable patients. The Phebe Hospital, a key medical institution in the region, relies heavily on its staff to provide life-saving services to a broad catchment area.
The Ministry clarified that while it provides substantial subsidies and support, the direct management and operation of Phebe Hospital fall under the purview of its governing partners: the Methodist, Episcopal, and Lutheran Churches. These religious institutions have historically provided leadership and stewardship in the administration of the hospital.
In light of the current tensions, the Ministry has issued a respectful call to the churches and the Hospital’s Board of Directors to intervene urgently. “We call upon them to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to amicably resolve the matter and prevent any disruption of normal health services,” the statement read.
To address the immediate concerns, the Ministry of Health has dispatched a team of senior officials to the scene. Their mandate is to assess the situation and implement short-term interventions to ensure that services remain operational while longer-term solutions are negotiated with the governing board.
In a direct appeal, the Ministry addressed the dedicated health workers of Phebe Hospital, urging them to consider the lives and wellbeing of the patients who depend on their care. “While grievances are acknowledged and must be addressed through constructive engagement, the Ministry urges that essential services continue uninterrupted, especially for vulnerable patients requiring urgent and life-saving care,” the statement noted. “The health and safety of the public must remain paramount.”
The government has reiterated its commitment to healthcare delivery, highlighting significant and ongoing subsidies provided to Phebe Hospital as part of sustained investments in the health sector.
The Ministry of Health has reaffirmed its readiness to support all constructive engagement efforts aimed at resolving the situation promptly, ensuring that the people of Bong County continue to receive the quality healthcare services they deserve.
