The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) on Thursday, May 8, 2025, joined the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in commemorating World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day under the theme “On the Side of Humanity.” The theme underscores the unwavering commitment of volunteers and staff across the globe, particularly those working in conflict zones, natural disasters, and public health emergencies.

As part of its national observance, the LNRCS activated local chapters across Liberia, hosting indoor events, humanitarian outreach programs, and first aid demonstrations. Volunteers provided free health screenings, distributed hygiene kits, and offered psychosocial support to vulnerable populations. These initiatives reflect the organization’s commitment to alleviating suffering and upholding the seven Fundamental Principles of the Movement, especially the principle of Humanity.

The Liberia National Red Cross Society was officially established in 1919 through an Act of the National Legislature. It gained full recognition as a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in 1962. Initially operating under the Ministry of Health, the LNRCS evolved into an autonomous humanitarian institution with its own governance and operational framework.

Over the decades, the society has played a central role in responding to emergencies in Liberia. During the civil wars of 1989–1996 and 1999–2003, the LNRCS provided life-saving assistance to displaced populations and those caught in conflict zones. Its neutrality and dedication to service enabled the organization to operate in some of the most dangerous areas, where few others could reach.

More recently, the LNRCS was at the forefront of the response to the Ebola outbreak between 2014 and 2016, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. It continues to serve rural and urban communities impacted by seasonal flooding, climate change, and outbreaks of disease. With its headquarters in Monrovia and chapters in all 15 counties, the LNRCS remains one of Liberia’s most trusted humanitarian institutions.

Speaking during this year’s celebration, Mr. Gregory Blamoh, Secretary General of the Liberia National Red Cross Society, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to serving the most vulnerable. “On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to stand with the vulnerable, the displaced, and the distressed. Our theme, ‘On the Side of Humanity,’ is not just a slogan—it is a call to action,” Mr. Blamoh declared.

He noted that as the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement marks the 60th anniversary of the Fundamental Principles, the LNRCS remains steadfast in its mission across Liberia. In the past year, the society has expanded access to first aid and maternal health services, responded to emergencies including fires and floods, launched environmental education and reforestation initiatives, and worked to promote values of inclusion and human dignity through youth engagement and peacebuilding programs.

Mr. Blamoh also paid tribute to Red Cross staff and volunteers who have died while carrying out humanitarian work. “We remember and honor the brave humanitarian workers who have lost their lives in the service of others. Thirty-four of our colleagues working in conflict zones paid the ultimate price in 2024, and already in 2025, ten more have fallen in service. Their courage and sacrifice remind us why we must protect the humanitarian space—so aid can reach those in need, without fear or restriction,” he said.

He called on global and national leaders to uphold humanitarian principles and safeguard the safety of aid workers who risk their lives daily to serve others.

The LNRCS continues to urge communities, partners, and government institutions to recognize and support the role of Red Cross volunteers and staff—many of whom are members of the very communities they serve. Their commitment, even in the face of adversity, stands as a powerful symbol of hope, resilience, and unity for the people of Liberia.

As the world observes World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, the Liberia National Red Cross Society reaffirms its century-old pledge to be on the side of humanity—today, tomorrow, and always.
