NIMBA COUNTY – Justina, a young girl from Kpein Town in Nimba County, has recently achieved a significant milestone in her recovery journey after enduring a series of life-threatening brain injuries and complex surgeries. The incident that changed her life occurred several months ago when she was struck by a falling tree branch during a storm, causing a severe head injury.
Following the incident, Justina’s condition worsened as a large cyst developed on her head, threatening her life and her future. Her mother, overwhelmed and desperate for help, mobilized her community to raise awareness. In a bid to seek aid, she shared a live video on social media, which quickly went viral, garnering widespread attention and support. The campaign successfully raised over $300, which was used to cover a crucial CT scan to assess the extent of Justina’s injury.
The scan confirmed the presence of a large cyst and increased intracranial pressure, necessitating urgent surgical intervention. The initial surgical team comprised two experienced neurosurgeons from JFK Medical Center in Liberia, Dr. Doe and Dr. Ballad. They performed an operation aimed at removing or reducing the cyst. Unfortunately, the first surgery did not achieve the desired outcome, and Justina’s condition did not improve as hoped.
A subsequent procedure involved inserting a shunt—a device designed to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid—to relieve pressure on her brain. Despite the hope that this intervention would stabilize her condition, the second surgery also failed, and Justina remained in severe pain, with her mobility and quality of life significantly compromised.
In a turn of hope, renowned US-based neurosurgeon Dr. Dewan, who was visiting Liberia as part of a medical outreach program, learned about Justina’s plight. Moved by her case, Dr. Dewan chose her as a beneficiary for a third, more advanced surgical procedure. This surgery involved meticulous removal of the cyst and placement of specialized drainage systems to ensure proper cerebrospinal fluid flow.
The latest operation has been a remarkable success. Recent updates and photographs reveal significant improvements in Justina’s health—her swelling has reduced, and she appears more alert and responsive. Medical professionals involved in her care remain optimistic about her recovery and future prospects.
Justina’s story highlights the power of community action, international medical collaboration, and the importance of timely, specialized healthcare access. Her family and supporters continue to hope for her full recovery, and her case serves as an inspiration to many in Liberia and beyond, emphasizing the need for continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and global medical partnerships.
