The House of Representatives has concurred with the Senate, completing the legislative passage of a landmark national Zoning Act. This final approval, granted on Thursday, January 15, 2026, clears the path for the bill to be sent to the President for his signature.
The Zoning Act of 2025 establishes Liberia’s first comprehensive, nationwide legal framework for the systematic development and management of land within its cities and towns. Designed to transform urban planning, the Act aims to spur orderly growth, protect public welfare, and secure a foundation for sustainable development across the country.
To achieve this, the law empowers authorities to divide municipal lands into specific use zonesโincluding residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, and environmental protection areas. This structured approach is intended to guide investment, prevent conflicting land uses, and ensure development aligns with long-term community and environmental needs.
Lawmakers hail the Act as a critical tool for strengthening land management, reducing urban chaos, and supporting balanced socioeconomic progress. By creating clear rules for where and how communities can grow, Liberia takes a definitive step toward planned, sustainable development for the future.
