MONROVIA, Liberia – President Joseph Boakai officially opened the Monrovia Super Mall in Oldest Congo Town on Saturday, describing the facility as a major boost to Liberia’s economic growth and urban development, while urging citizens to support foreign partnerships rather than criticize them.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President expressed appreciation to Chinese partners for what he termed a “strategic investment” in Liberia. “Those of you who always complain about them, thank them for this strategic investment,” President Boakai said. “Believe in what we are doing, and you will see more investments like these.”

He emphasized that quality investments such as the Monrovia Super Mall contribute significantly to improving the lives of Liberians and revitalizing communities. “This is the kind of investment that brings life to our people,” he added. “As we work to clean up and develop our city, these are the types of initiatives we want to encourage.”

The President further described the facility as one of the best modern shopping centers in the country and called on more investors to follow suit.

Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Cheng Wu described the mall’s opening as a historic milestone in China-Liberia relations.

“I am delighted to join you today to witness the grand opening of the Monrovia Super Mall,” Ambassador Yin said. “This achievement reflects the growing economic and trade cooperation between China and Liberia.”

He noted that since President Boakai assumed office, the government has improved the business environment and attracted increased foreign investment under its development agenda.

According to Ambassador Yin, the mall represents not only a modern shopping and dining destination but also a symbol of the longstanding friendship between the Chinese and Liberian people. He highlighted the presence of affordable Chinese products in the supermarket, stating that such goods help reduce the cost of living while offering Liberians access to global standards.

The Ambassador also reaffirmed China’s commitment to Liberia’s development, citing ongoing cooperation in infrastructure, agriculture, mining, healthcare, and education. He disclosed that China has implemented a zero-tariff policy on 100 percent of Liberian exports since December 2024, with plans to extend similar benefits across Africa. The policy, he said, has already contributed to a 23.9 percent increase in Liberia’s exports to China in 2025.

Earlier in the day, President Boakai attended the 2026 National Fast and Prayer Day at the Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary, where he expressed optimism about the country’s future and attributed national progress to divine intervention. “God will bless this nation, I have no doubt,” the President said. He clarified that he does not take personal credit for the country’s progress, instead citing God’s grace and the prayers of the Liberian people.
