(Monrovia): In a significant step toward strengthening media integrity and accountability in Liberia, the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) will today, Wednesday, January 28, 2026, formally relaunch the National Media Council (NMC).

The National Media Council is a multi-stakeholder body mandated to enforce the Code of Ethics and Conduct for journalists and media institutions. Its reactivation reflects a renewed commitment to professional standards, public trust, and press freedom in Liberia’s media landscape.

The nine-member Council brings together representatives from the journalism and media community, civil society, government, academia, women’s organizations, and religious institutions – underscoring a broad, inclusive approach to media accountability.

Evolving from the former Media Complaints Committee and the Grievance and Ethics Committee, the reconstituted Council will now serve as a forum for adjudicating complaints related to the work and conduct of journalists and media institutions.

The PUL expresses confidence that the participation of institutions such as the Office of the Ombudsman, Liberia Council of Churches, National Muslim Council of Liberia, National Civil Society Council of Liberia, and Women NGO Secretariat will instill trust in the Council, elevate journalistic practice, and reinforce ethical compliance across the media sector.

Once seated, the National Media Council will have the authority to sanction journalists and media institutions found in violation of professional standards, in line with the Code of Ethics and Conduct of the Press Union of Liberia.

The relaunch event will also feature a panel discussion on media self-regulation in the age of digital media and citizen journalism, reflecting the evolving challenges and opportunities facing Liberia’s media.
