The House of Representatives has moved a critical step forward in addressing a healthcare crisis, mandating a detailed review of a bill to establish the Paynesville Comprehensive Referral Hospital (PCRH). This action followed the formal submission of the draft legislation by Montserrado County Representative, Atty. Michael Thomas.

Citing constitutional authority to create necessary government agencies, Rep. Thomas presented a compelling case rooted in urgent need. He highlighted the severe strain on the existing Du-port Road Public Health Center, which serves over 150 patients daily despite operating beyond its intended capacity. Current cases are 60% maternity-related, 15% trauma, and 25% other illnesses.

“Given the growing demand for healthcare services, stakeholders, community leaders, and health practitioners have recommended the transformation of the Du-port Road Public Health Center into a referral hospital,” Thomas stated. The proposed PCRH would function as a multi-specialty hub, providing essential referral, trauma, maternity, and general public health services for Paynesville and surrounding communities.

Following deliberations, Plenary unanimously voted to send the draft bill to the Committees on Health, Ways, Means and Finance, and Judiciary. These committees are tasked with a thorough scrutiny and must return their recommendations before the legislation proceeds further, paving the way for a potential transformation of the city’s healthcare infrastructure.

Paynesville is a major, rapidly growing city in Montserrado County, Liberia, situated east of the capital, Monrovia, and serves as a key commercial hub, known for its large Red Light Market, landmarks like the SKD Sports Complex, and developing infrastructure, while also facing challenges with water management and sanitation.
