NIMBA COUNTY — The Rural Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) has electrified several towns and villages along the Ganta-Sanniquellie highway in Nimba County through a transformative Rural Renewable Energy Project. The Rural Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) has been working tirelessly to increase access to electricity in rural Liberia, including Nimba County.
Launched in 2021, the initiative provides clean and reliable electricity to previously off-grid communities, including Gbedin, Tondin, Zuluyee, Dingarmon, Kitomah, and others. Powered by Gbedin Falls Hydropower Plant — a 9.34MW run-of-river hydropower plant will provide electricity to thousands of households in Nimba County.
Solar Home Systems — a project connecting over 6,900 households in all 15 counties, including Nimba, to solar energy, improving the quality of life and economic prospects. Rural Energy Fund — a fund managed by the RREA Board of Directors to facilitate coordinated funding of economically viable, socially acceptable, and environmentally friendly rural electrical and improved energy technology projects and programs.
The arrival of electricity represents a significant development milestone and the fulfillment of generational hopes for many residents. The renewable energy project, centered on solar and hybrid mini-grid systems, will provide power for homes, schools, health facilities, and small businesses, bringing immediate improvements.
A Symbol of Hope and Resilience
As night falls over the hills of Nimba County, the lights of Gbedin, Tondin, and neighboring towns shine brightly, symbolizing hope, resilience, and the enduring legacy of Liberia’s ancestors. This transformation is a testament to the collaborative efforts of international donors, development partners, and the Government of Liberia, aiming to improve living standards and foster sustainable development through environmentally friendly technologies.
In a celebrity atmosphere, thousands of Nimbaians have welcomed the launch of solar and hybrid mini-grid systems in their communities, thanking the government and implementing partners for bringing electricity to their homes and towns. The jubilant citizens who came out Friday night to see the first-ever solar and hybrid mini-grid systems expressed heart-warming commitment to provide security to the light and as well as the light ensuring their security and safety from dangers, including snakes.
