Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberian Senate unanimously confirmed Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as the nation’s new Chief Justice on Thursday, July 17, 2025, solidifying his leadership of the Supreme Court and the broader judiciary.

All 24 senators present voted in favor of Gbeisay’s appointment, with no opposition or abstentions—a rare bipartisan endorsement underscoring broad confidence in his qualifications.

The decision followed a thorough review by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Claims, and Petitions, led by Sinoe County Senator Augustine S. Chea. In its report, the committee affirmed that Gbeisay fulfills all constitutional requirements, citing his “unquestionable moral integrity, profound legal expertise, and demonstrated leadership.”

Gbeisay, previously an Associate Justice, ascends to the role following the retirement of Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh, who stepped down after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
