‎NIMBA COUNTY,  Liberia — Mercy Giah, a 26-year-old mother of three children allegedly murdered by their grandmother, has expressed devastation and shock over the incident. The suspect, Mary Giah, 56 years old, has confessed to killing her grandchildren in Mehnla Town, Nimba County Electoral District #9, on February 22, 2026.

The victims were identified as Mewaseh Giah, 6, Marvelous Zainsaye, 4, and Alvina Tokpah, 2. During the police’s interrogation, she admitted to using a knife and a blade in the attack. The children were left in her care by their mother, Mercy Giah, who discovered their bodies upon returning home that early Sunday morning.

The suspect reportedly blamed ongoing accusations and bullying of her being a witch by her daughter’s boyfriend as her motive. “I killed them because he kept calling me a witch. I believed nothing good would come between him and my daughter, so I bought a knife and razor blade and carried out the act,” she reportedly told authorities. She fled the scene but was later arrested by community members and police.

Mercy Giah describes her mother as a loving caregiver and grandmother to her children, saying she had never shown hostility towards them. “There was never any issue between my mother and me. She was a caregiver and grandmother to my children,” she said.

Mercy Giah believes her mother acted out of anger and misguided emotions, if her reported motive of disputes with her boyfriend is true.

The grieving mother-of-three deceased children said she left her children with her mother Saturday night and returned home at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday. Upon entering the house, she found her daughter Alvina, 2-years-old lying on the floor with a deep neck cut and unresponsive. She then discovered the bodies of her two sons, Marvelous, 4, and Mewaseh, 6, with similar injuries in another room.

However,  the Liberia National Police have arrested Mercy’s father and uncle, who were sleeping in the house, in connection with the incident.

The 56-year-old grandmother’s actions have sparked widespread debate about the safety and care of children left in the custody of grandparents, highlighting concerns about protection measures for vulnerable children.

In Nimb County, many are questioning how such a tragic incident could occur due to a misunderstanding, emphasizing the need for careful consideration when leaving children with caregivers, even family members.

Local authorities and police are appealing for calm as investigations continue into the tragic incident. The suspect has been arrested and is expected to appear in court soon.
