NIMBA COUNTY, Liberia — The SUP-PROSA Alliance, a coalition of student political parties at Nimba University, has intensified its campaign to unseat the ruling Students Liberation Party (SLP) ahead of the student council elections.
Hundreds of supporters marched through Sanniquellie City to the university campus on Friday, March 21, 2026, to formally unveil the coalition’s candidates. The gathering featured chants against corruption and marked a public show of force for the opposition, which is seeking to capitalize on discontent with the current student government.
The coalition’s standard bearer, Zlanner Karkermac Yenglee, addressed students at the university’s student park, criticizing the SLP-led administration for what he described as a lack of transparency and accountability. “You need leaders who will listen to students, not just promise and deliver nothing,” Yenglee said.
Yenglee leveled specific allegations against the ruling party, accusing it of mismanaging student funds and failing to provide financial aid to students in need, which he said contributed to increased dropout rates. “They have had two years, and what do we have to show for it?” Yenglee asked. “Increased dropouts, unmet needs, and a student body that is frustrated. Don’t let them make excuses – it’s time to hold them accountable at the polls.”
He urged students to vote for the SUP-PROSA Alliance, which is campaigning on a platform it calls ADACS: Accountability & Transparency, Development, Accessibility Leadership, Continued Advocacy, and Social Justice.
The ruling Students Liberation Party (SLP) is seeking re-election with standard bearer Prince K. Darwon. The party has held student leadership for two successive terms under the agenda TRUST: Transparency, Reconciliation, Unity, Sports, and Tangibles. The SLP is seeking to retain control of the student council, which includes representatives and senators from the university’s six colleges.
Incumbent Student Council President T. Emmanuel Nuwahn and his administration are facing a challenge from the SUP-PROSA coalition, which is promising a fresh approach focused on student welfare and campus development.
The general and presidential elections are scheduled for Thursday, March 26, 2026. Hundreds of registered students are expected to vote. Elected officials will serve a two-year term.
