A six-week Trauma Relief Training of Trainers (TOT) program, organized by FREE Liberia in collaboration with Surge International and AFLA Liberia, successfully equipped 25 participants from Monrovia and surrounding areas with essential skills to address trauma in their communities. The training, held from June 17 to July 22, 2025, at FREE Liberia’s Congo Town office, combined virtual facilitation by U.S.-based experts with in-person participation, creating a hybrid learning model that accommodated both local and international perspectives.
The program focused on practical, culturally relevant trauma relief techniques, including emotional self-assessment using the Feeling Thermometer, narrative exercises through My Trauma Story, the transformative Tree of Life model, and brain-based stress management with the “Flipping Your Lid” hand model. These tools were designed to help participants understand trauma triggers, develop coping strategies, and foster resilience in themselves and others.
Facilitators Holly Love, Roberta Reed, Roy Reed, and Amb. George Blamoh led the sessions with a participatory approach, emphasizing interactive discussions, group exercises, and guided reflections. The training prioritized psychological safety, allowing participants to share personal experiences and practice trauma-informed techniques in a supportive environment.
A post-training evaluative survey revealed significant outcomes, with 100% of participants reporting improved understanding of trauma and immediate application of healing tools in their personal and professional lives. Additionally, 86% noted enhanced emotional stability and hopefulness, while 93% expressed readiness to serve as trauma relief trainers in their communities. Participants particularly valued the program’s cultural relevance, safe-space principles, and practical demonstrations, which empowered them to address trauma effectively.
Qualitative feedback highlighted personal transformations, with one participant stating, “I was very traumatized before coming here, but now I am okay,” while another emphasized the value of empathy-building exercises. Suggestions for future improvements included extending the program duration, expanding to rural areas and schools, and increasing public awareness through social media and partnerships.
The training concluded with a certification ceremony and expressions of gratitude from FREE Liberia to partners, facilitators, and participants.
