Liberia – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is calling on the Liberian government and local authorities to adopt and expand a successful youth program that combines environmental protection with economic empowerment. The appeal was made at the official launch of the Youth Eco-Brigade in Tubmanburg.
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Louis Kuukpen congratulated the new cohort of volunteers, emphasizing that their role is a form of leadership and community service. “This program is transformative,” Kuukpen stated. “It offers vulnerable youth, women, and persons with disabilities opportunities for environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihoods.”
The initiative provides participants with business training and a $400 start-up grant to launch income-generating projects. Kuukpen highlighted success stories from other counties where young entrepreneurs have built thriving businesses from these modest grants.
He urged national and local governments to integrate the Eco-Brigade into development strategies and allocate dedicated funding. “UNDP will continue its support, but long-term success depends on national ownership,” Kuukpen emphasized.
Representing the Environmental Protection Agency, Anthony Kollie praised the program for linking environmental care with economic empowerment. “We are cultivating a new generation of leaders committed to preserving Liberia’s natural resources while creating green jobs,” Kollie said.
Supported by international partners including Denmark, Luxembourg, and Norway, the program teaches skills in environmental management and entrepreneurship. Since 2019, it has expanded to multiple counties, with the Tubmanburg launch marking its third cohort.
UNDP Project Coordinator Abraham Tumbey described the Eco-Brigade as a volunteer movement that blends community service with livelihood development. Over the next 20 days, participants will lead clean-up campaigns before receiving their start-up grants.
The program aligns with President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, prioritizing youth empowerment, economic growth, and environmental sustainability as part of Liberia’s broader efforts to promote inclusive development.
