-Amidst Supreme Court Controversy

Monrovia — In a bold move, the UP Alliance, fervent supporters of the ruling Unity Party, convened a press conference in Monrovia to address the escalating tensions surrounding President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s response to a contentious Supreme Court ruling. The ruling declared the majority bloc, head by Rep. Richard Nagbe Koon in the House of Representatives illegal, a decision President Boakai has opted to challenge by continuing to cooperate with the bloc, citing potential legislative paralysis and threats to national stability.

Mr. Gabriel H. Salee, chairman of the UP Alliance and deputy minister of administration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, articulated the Alliance’s support for President Boakai’s stance. Salee argued that enforcing the Supreme Court’s decision could lead to legislative gridlock, jeopardizing governance and undermining peace and progress across Liberia.

“The UP Alliance stands firmly with President Boakai,” declared Salee. “His leadership exemplifies a commitment to constitutional governance, the rule of law, and the democratic responsibilities of government.”

Condemnation of Opposition Threats

Salee also took a firm stance against what he described as irresponsible threats from certain opposition members, accusing them of trying to destabilize the state. He emphasized the need for unity and urged all political actors to support President Boakai to maintain peace and foster development.

“The threats we’ve seen from some opposition elements are an attempt to sow chaos and undermine our state’s stability,” Salee stated. “We call on all political actors to rally behind President Boakai to ensure continued peace and development in Liberia.”

Criticism of the Supreme Court’s Role

The UP Alliance criticized the Supreme Court’s intervention, arguing it overstepped its bounds and blurred the separation of powers between the judiciary and the legislature. Salee highlighted the potential ramifications of the court’s decision, which could invalidate critical legislations, including the National Budget, affecting essential services like healthcare and financial agreements.

“The court’s decision risks invalidating essential legislations, impacting everything from healthcare to financial agreements,” Salee explained. “We urge the Supreme Court to respect the separation of powers and reconsider its position.”

Mr. Salee accused the Chief Justice of exhibiting double standards. He claims that the Chief Justice instructed the Judiciary’s financial team to participate in a budget hearing overseen by then-Majority Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, a budget that the High Court has declared illegal. Additionally, Mr. Salee alleged that the Chief Justice benefited from this budget. He further stated that the Chief Justice ordered a retroactive payment of $60 thousand dollars to herself and $40 thousand dollars to other Associate Justices to settle deductions made from their benefits and salaries during the harmonization process in President Weah’s Administration.

Call for Dialogue and Stability

Amidst the political turmoil, the UP Alliance called for calm and constructive dialogue to resolve the ongoing disputes. Salee emphasized the Alliance’s commitment to working with the current majority bloc in the House until internal disputes are settled, reinforcing their dedication to peace, democracy, and the rule of law.

“In these challenging times, we must remain united and focused on dialogue to resolve our differences peacefully,” Salee urged. “The UP Alliance remains committed to working with the current majority to ensure government operations continue smoothly.”

Conclusion

In closing, Salee reaffirmed the Alliance’s unwavering support for President Boakai and urged all Liberians to reject divisive actions. He called on the nation to support its leadership in navigating through this critical period, emphasizing that the future of Liberia rests on collaborative efforts to uphold constitutional order and democratic principles.

“We must reject any attempts to divide us and instead focus on building a unified and prosperous Liberia,” Salee concluded. “Together, we can move forward and ensure a brighter future for all Liberians.”
