-One Suspect Arrested As LNP Launches Probe

Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has confirmed that a young civilian woman was critically injured during a confrontation between police officers and armed suspects along Kesselly Boulevard late Friday night, sparking public outcry and demands for accountability.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 PM on July 18, 2025, when officers from the LNP’s Anti-Robbery Unit, conducting routine patrols, attempted to apprehend individuals on motorbikes suspected of criminal activity. According to police reports, one suspect opened fire, prompting officers to return fire. In the exchange, 22-year-old Massa Crawford, a resident of Doe Community, was struck by a bullet in the right side of her jaw.
Crawford was rushed to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, where she remains under treatment. The LNP stated that it is collaborating with hospital authorities to ensure she receives optimal care. One suspect has been arrested and is in custody, though authorities have not disclosed further details about the individual or the alleged criminal activity.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Cecelia G. Clarke, the LNP’sspokesperson, expressed regret over the incident and assured the public of a thorough investigation. “We deeply regret the injury caused to Massa Crawford and her family,” Clarke said in the official release. “The LNP is committed to a transparent, impartial probe, and we will not hesitate to take action if misconduct is found.”
The statement emphasized the LNP’s dedication to “the highest standards of professionalism”* but acknowledged the incident’s potential to erode public trust. Residents in Gardnersville and nearby communities have voiced concerns over the risks posed by such operations, with some questioning whether proper protocols were followed.
The police have pledged to release further updates as the investigation progresses and urged witnesses to come forward with information.
