-Calls for Health Sector Reform

Monrovia, Liberia – The Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) has joined a growing number of voices expressing alarm over the scandal involving Dr. Peter Matthew George, whose medical license was recently revoked by the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) over allegations of fraudulent credentials.
Dr. George, once hailed as a leading figure in the medical community and former President of the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA), is now at the center of a national scandal. Investigations have revealed that he operated for years under the guise of a qualified medical professional without verifiable credentials—raising questions about how he was able to ascend to such influential positions within Liberia’s health sector.
According to reports, Dr. George’s alleged malpractice may have resulted in serious harm and even loss of life for patients who sought his care in good faith. His case has sparked public outrage and highlighted deep-rooted challenges in the country’s healthcare system.
In a statement released this week, WONGOSOL called on the Government of Liberia, particularly the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Health, to take immediate and comprehensive action. The organization outlined a four-point demand:
- A transparent and independent investigation into Dr. George’s medical practice and the systems that enabled his appointments.
- International collaboration to ensure his return and legal accountability if he is confirmed to be outside Liberia.
- The enforcement of strict verification processes for all healthcare professionals going forward.
- Thorough reform of the health sector’s regulatory bodies to rebuild public trust and ensure the protection of all Liberians—particularly women and girls who are disproportionately affected by gaps in the healthcare system.
WONGOSOL emphasized that this is not an isolated case, but a glaring symptom of deeper institutional failures. “The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated,” the group noted. “Liberia cannot afford to let this case fade into impunity. For too long, violations in the health sector have gone unpunished. This time must be different—Liberia deserves better.”
WONGOSOL also raised critical questions about the processes through which Dr. George was selected for leadership roles in national health institutions. The organization stressed that the government must uncover how such appointments were made and take corrective measures to ensure transparency and accountability moving forward.
