Monrovia — The Youth Humanitarian Movement (YHM), with support from ActionAid Liberia under the SPA II Project, donated sanitation tools and food items to communities on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. The initiative targeted Seekie Community on Duport Road and Doe Community, aiming to strengthen local capacity in sanitation and flood prevention.
The donated items included shovels, trash cans, brooms, rakes, cutlasses, wheelbarrows, rain boots, hand gloves, nose masks, and bags of rice to support community volunteers.
Speaking at the ceremony, YHM Program Officer Ms. Peggie N. Kai recalled that YHM had earlier conducted an assessment in the communities, which revealed challenges such as poor drainage, waste management, lack of safe water, and inadequate toilet facilities.
“The Youth Humanitarian Movement is a humanitarian youth-led movement committed to addressing humanitarian issues, disaster prevention, and promoting safer communities. Today’s donation is a way of empowering the youth and community to clean their drainages, reduce waste, and protect themselves against flooding,” Ms. Kai said.
She encouraged community members, especially young people, to take ownership of the donated tools and use them effectively. She also announced a community clean-up exercise in Seekie Community on September 4, 2025, where YHM will join local youth in clearing drainages and improving sanitation.
Community leaders and residents expressed deep appreciation, noting that while many organizations have assessed their needs, few have returned with tangible support. They assured YHM and ActionAid Liberia that the materials will be properly utilized to improve the living conditions of residents.
However, the Youth Humanitarian Movement is a youth-led humanitarian organization dedicated to disaster prevention, management, and strengthening local resilience. YHM works with young people to reduce the risks of flooding, improve sanitation, and promote community-driven solutions to humanitarian challenges.
Meanwhile, ActionAid is an international humanitarian and human rights organization working in Liberia to advance social justice, gender equality, and poverty eradication. Through the SPA II Project, ActionAid partners with community-based organizations like YHM to empower marginalized groups, strengthen resilience, and support sustainable community-led initiatives.
