-LNP Reports on Back-to-Back Highway Accidents
MONROVIA, Liberia — The wails of bereaved families echoed across Bong County this weekend as the Liberia National Police confirmed two catastrophic road traffic accidents in just 24 hours, claiming 11 lives and leaving six others injured — some fighting for their survival.
The first tragedy struck on Saturday, August 22, 2026, near the Barboo Worms Factory along the Suakoko–Gbondoi Highway. A yellow Toyota taxi and a gray Toyota Camry collided in what witnesses described as a horrific impact that left both vehicles mangled beyond recognition. Eight people — six men and two women — perished at the scene. Among the dead were both drivers.
Less than a day later, on Sunday, August 23, grief visited the community of Mazinsu along the Weala–Salala route. A Kia vehicle, a trailer, and a truck became entangled in a deadly wreck that claimed the lives of three women. Six others were rushed to medical facilities, with two reported in critical condition, their families now keeping vigil beside hospital beds.
“We have lost too many souls on these roads,” said a senior LNP officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, his voice heavy with frustration. “Behind every number is a mother, a father, a child — someone who left home and never returned.”
The Liberian National Police has launched full investigations into both incidents to determine the circumstances that led to the collisions. Preliminary reports suggest a combination of speeding, reckless driving, and poor road conditions may have contributed, though authorities have not confirmed any official findings.
In a statement issued Sunday evening, the LNP extended its “deepest condolences to the bereaved families” and wished the injured “a speedy recovery.” But for those who lost loved ones, no statement can fill the void left by sudden, violent departure.
As Liberia grapples with this weekend of tragedy, police are urging motorists to exercise maximum caution, obey traffic regulations, and drive responsibly.
“Every life matters,” the police statement read. “These accidents are preventable. We implore all drivers to slow down, stay alert, and remember that the road is shared with families, children, and futures.”
