The Executive Director of the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA), Samuel Nagbe, has disclosed that the agency has invested approximately US$4 million in the solarization of 90 public health facilities across Liberia as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery and ensure reliable electricity access in rural communities.
Speaking during the regular Ministry of Information press briefing on Thursday, June 25, 2026, Nagbe said the initiative, implemented under the Liberia Electricity Access Project (LEAP) with support from the World Bank, has provided round-the-clock electricity to health centers that previously relied on generators, flashlights, and mobile phone lights during medical procedures and childbirth.
According to him, the intervention has significantly improved conditions for healthcare workers and patients by powering essential medical equipment, maternity wards, staff quarters, laboratories, warehouses, and other critical sections of health facilities.
Nagbe revealed that many health facilities across the country previously struggled with inadequate electricity, forcing medical personnel to conduct nighttime deliveries under difficult conditions. He noted that the installation of solar power systems and battery storage units has improved service delivery and enhanced patient care, particularly in rural communities.
The RREA Executive Director further disclosed that the agency has adopted a “100 percent solarization” approach, ensuring that entire health facilities, rather than selected sections, receive reliable electricity. He said the systems provide an uninterrupted power supply and support the operation of equipment such as incubators, microscopes, vaccine refrigerators, and other essential medical devices.
Emphasizing the importance of electricity to national development, Nagbe said access to reliable power remains critical to improving healthcare outcomes, education, security, and economic activities. He pledged the agency’s continued commitment to expanding renewable energy solutions across Liberia.
In highlighting other achievements, Nagbe said the agency is also implementing the Liberia Renewable Energy Access Project in Lofa County, where a hybrid power system comprising solar generation, battery energy storage, diesel backup generation, and transmission infrastructure is nearing completion. The project is expected to connect approximately 10,000 homes, businesses, and public institutions to electricity.
He explained that the agency works closely with the private sector, development partners, and government institutions to expand electricity access and promote sustainable energy development throughout the country.
Established in 2015, the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency is mandated to promote renewable energy technologies and facilitate the economic transformation of rural Liberia by increasing access to modern and affordable energy services.
